FFWD Crab-Avocado "Ravioli"

Well, this didn't work for me at all.  I started slicing the avocado with my mandoline.  I got a few pretty slices, but it wasn't sharp enough to cut through the pit.  I tried switching to my sharpest knife, but I couldn't get it to slice through the pit either.  To be perfectly honest, I also didn't try that hard.  Charlotte's 1st birthday was last Friday, so I hosted a family dinner that night and then a birthday party with friends on Saturday.  By Sunday night when I was making this I was sick of being in the kitchen.  So, I took out the pit, sliced the rest of the avocado the best I could, and just made layers.  The next day for lunch I made an even easier version.  I served avocado halves (still in their skin) stuffed with the crab salad.  I thought this recipe was only okay.  I think it may have been the canned crab meat (my grocery store was out of fresh), but i just didn't love eating it.

In the interest of full disclosure, here's a picture of our dinner table.  After making the crab salad, I just put out left over party food (still in the plastic bags) to eat.  What can I say?  We all deserve to be lazy sometimes.  I'm looking forward to trying the skate next week - if I can somehow manage to find skate.

  1. I don't think you will see too many people who actually sliced through the pits :-)
I kind of like your leftover table.

  3. I think your table looks delightful! So much more fun than being fussy.

I ended up with a few ravioli, but then just made tostadas from the rest of the ingredients.

  4. Mandolines scare me…I won’t be cutting through any avocado pits! Yours really does look delicious…what could be bad about crab meat salad and avocado! Happy “1st" Birthday to Charlotte!

  5. Yep - that wasn't happening for me, either. We enjoyed our salad as part of a smorgasbord, too!

  6. I had canned crab, too, and I couldn't even eat it. It was so fishy. So, I agree that using canned fish definitely impacts the outcome of this dish. I'm impressed you even tried to slice through that pit! I was sooooo not going to try. Happy birthday to your wee one! You definitely deserve a few lazy nights!

  7. I didn't even try to slice through the pits - I just pitted them and used a knife to make the slices. I don't think I'll bother with this presentation again, but the ingredient combination I'll definitely be revisiting. Also, parents with small children deserve as many lazy nights as they can get!

  8. It is good to be lazy sometimes - this morning I did just that, eating leftover canned soup and a crumpet for breakfast. This wasn't a smash for me either.

  9. Dear Jora, a very Happy Birthday to Charlotte, even if it is a bit "belated" - a year already...hope you had great parties with family and friends - I know that the food must have been wonderful because even your table with "left-overs" looks wonderful. Your Crab-Avocado Ravioli on that big white plate also looks fabulous - even if most of us (including) myself had issues with the rather unruly avocado pit, we still liked the flavor combination of this recipe.
    Have a wonderful Sunday,
    Andrea

  10. Happy Birthday to Charlotte, wow, I can't believe it has been a whole year. I remember us all waiting for news of her delivery... it goes so quickly. Your experience sounds idential to mine, but you wisely quiet before you lost the top of your finger like I did.

  11. Thank you for full disclosure. I tend to like the "real" pictures more than the posed ones.
