CCC March

(I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get these pictures rotated properly.  They look correct before I upload them, but then somehow the uploading rotates them, and once they're uploaded I can't seem to rotate them back.  Anyway...)

I think I'm basically caught up with all of the recipes we have made, so I decided to take it easy this month.  We're just starting to see asparagus here--it isn't local, that's still a while away, but at least it's from the US--and so I decided to use it atop the Asparagus Pizza.  We were so busy eating that I forgot to take pictures, so here's a picture of the leftovers I brought for lunch at my desk.  This is becoming a family favorite--Charlotte enjoyed it too.  I imagine I'll make it again before asparagus season runs out.

I just finished mixing the Pea and Mint Ice Cream.  It's chilling in the fridge to prepare for churning.  I'll try to post an addendum with a better review once I actually taste it.  I did want to say that I've made both ice creams now, and I really find the custard recipe in this book difficult.  Both times it's curdled long before even starting to get thick.  This means I end up settling for a runny custard, which turns into very ice-y ice cream.  I'm not very good at making custard, and certainly take full responsibility for my struggles, but I have had better luck with other custard recipes.  I'll probably go back to those in the future.

I'm looking forward to getting back in the swing of things next month.  We're finally starting to see some spring produce!

  1. I'm so looking forward to cooking with spring vegetables again and that asparagus pizza will be one of the first recipes I make when it becomes available! I do hope you post your impressions of the ice cream if you have a chance - it's such a pretty colour when its churned, just not sure about the flavour.

  2. Hi Jora, one can not help but be more than impressed in such comprehensive preparation of so many recipes. Congratulations! I rarely follow recipes from cookbooks, using them mainly as inspiration, or bits of instruction on ingredients, so River Cottage veg has been quite a treat, including meeting so many nice people and sharing together these preparation outcomes. Many among the recipes have been so delicious, and others, quite unique which has been a real pleasure. Looking forward to trying the asparagus pizza too! Thanks for your many contributions to the group!

  4. I'm desperate for spring vegetables! No sign of them here yet. I'm so jealous of your asparagus pizza and pea ice cream. Happy Spring!

  5. Can't wait to hear how the pea ice cream is! I almost chose this recipe (I do like to lean toward the unusual), just did not have the time. I loved the asparagus pizza, will be making this one again too.

  6. I'm curious to hear how the ice cream turns out, too. I haven't tried either of the ice creams in the book, but when I do, I'll be wary of the custard. The asparagus pizza looks wonderful - I'll have to work out a gluten-free, vegan version for Kevin, as asparagus is one of his favourites.

  8. Dear Jora, did you end up liking the Pea Ice Cream - I wil be making it again this month as the kids keep asking for it, they just love and so do I. It has a very pretty color and we quite enjoy the taste. The asparagus pizza is one of the best recipes from the book - no surprise that Charlotte enjoys it - will be making this as soon as local asparaugs will hit the markets.
Thank you for being part of the group - I so enjoy cooking along with you and all the other members!

P.S.: Has the package still not arrived at your house, I mailed it on March the 9th along with all the other packages and included a little something for Charlotte...
