I need to learn how to drizzle |
When I saw that the recipe for this week was Nutella Tartine I was worried it was going to be a long and complicated recipe. So I was thrilled when I looked at the recipe and saw how easy it was. I was also excited because I love anything chocolate and orange, I just made
Meyer Lemon-Cara Cara Orange Marmalade a couple of weeks ago, and I had some left-over Bubble-Top Brioche in the freezer that I wanted to use up.

After assembling the ingredients, the recipe came together easily. We both liked the tartines (definitely didn't love them), and it was nice to have a dessert that wasn't too heavy feeling. I found myself wondering, though, if all of those steps were really necessary. After assembling the very simple dessert I (I mean, Paul) had a pot, a glass bowl, and a baking tray to wash. So, the next night I decided to simplify the recipe by just toasting the bread (skipping the butter) and spreading on some nutella (that hadn't been warmed) and marmalade. I did a terrible job drizzling the nutella the first night, so this simplified version looked and tasted very similar, was quicker, and made no dishes. I won't go out of my way to make this again, but it might be a great way to use up the rest of my frozen brioche (although brioche bread pudding is also sounding like an excellent option). Go
here to see what everybody else thought of the recipe.
We had some friends over for dinner after work last Friday, and since I knew I'd still be cooking when they got here I wanted to have a small appetizer. I decided it was a perfect time to make the
Sweet and Spicy Cocktail Nuts recipe that I missed. I woke up early on Friday morning to make these and was pretty annoyed by the instruction to lift the nuts out of the coating and shake off the excess egg whites one-by-one. I don't have that much patience (especially at 5:30 in the morning!) so I did this in small batches, and then got the nuts into the oven. Despite the annoyance, we all loved these. They are strangely addictive. I'm still partial to Ina Garten's
Chipotle and Rosemary Roasted Nuts, however. They were easier to make and everyone who tried them raved about the flavor combination. I think nuts are a great appetizer, though, and you can never have too many great recipes.

I also made the Basque Potato Tortilla recipe for dinner this week. We really enjoyed this, and I got to check another recipe off of my list of recipes to catch up on. The ingredients were simple, it was quick and easy, and I love eggs and potatoes.
I liked, but didn't love, the nutella tartine when I made it, too. Decided to catch up on the basque potato tortilla this week, instead of making the tartine again. It was good!
ReplyDeleteI actually made these nuts about a month ago. The trick is to double the amount of nuts but leave all of the other ingredients alone. That way you don't have excess egg white to scrape off (who the heck has the time) and the nuts come out perfectly seasoned. I would love to take credit for this little trick, but I actually read it on someone else's blog, don't remember whose, but it really works.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this tip! I love hearing about easier ways to make the same recipes.
DeleteI'm curious how bitter your marmalade is. I tried making some and it was way too bitter. We actually liked the tartine a lot more than we expected to. I found the nutella impossible to drizzle so I added water to thin it out.
ReplyDeleteMy marmalade was a little bit bitter, but I cut down the sugar in the recipe. I think it would have been perfect if I had followed the recipe exactly. Thanks for the tip on adding water, I should have thought of that!
DeleteLove, love, love those sweet & spicy nuts! They're so good.
ReplyDeleteWish you had loved the tartine more - it looks great using the bubble-top brioche!
Oh, my! And I thought I had Dorie-extravaganza meals! So great that you had brioche on hand from last month. Mine was sadly all eaten. Great post!
ReplyDeleteBrioche bread pudding sounds wonderful - you already had the tartines! I was also a terrible Nutella swirler. I thinned mine with a bit of milk and still couldn't get the pretty drizzle on my crackers.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I wasn't the only one! I'm so bad at decorating. I decided to make the bread pudding :-) It was excellent.
DeleteGreat catch up!
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree that the bread pudding is a great way to use up that brioche. Yum
Nice work on catching up. Three recipes in one week is great progress! I didn't even bother following the direction closely and I agree that it was a little fussy. Toaster and microwave worked just fine. :)
ReplyDeleteMy spouse said it was much ado about nothing. Won't be reappearing at our house. The Apple Cake will definitely be appearing in the next week for his birthday :) Bread pudding is a terrific use for the brioche - I still have some leftover also.
ReplyDeleteHow clever of your spouse. Much ado about nothing sums up my feelings about this one exactly...
DeleteI am on "team bread pudding" like most of your commenters. I can't believe how many Dorie recipes you knocked out this week - very impressive. And kudos for keeping it real- that is what makes this group so valuable. I was not a big Nutella fan before this recipe but did think it was the butter, salt, marm and nutella that all made it work. And I would not have combined them were it not for FFWD. But next time I will use the toaster :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't actually like this one, but it was worth trying to find out. About those delicious nuts, I've made them several times and do not bother about placing them one-by-one. They didn't suffer.
