FFWD David’s seaweed sablés

I'm a big fan of David Lebovitz.  I read his blog regularly, and his cookbooks are among the ones I turn to first when I want to make a dessert.  I was certainly surprised when I read the description and list of ingredients for these cookies, but I was also very curious.  Paul and I went to a play at an outdoor venue (Wolftrap) a couple of weeks ago, so I decided to pack these cookies as part of our picnic.  Happily, these cookies were very easy to make.  I made the dough after breakfast, put it in the fridge to chill while I ran to the grocery store, and had the cookies in the oven soon after I got back.

To go with the cookies, I made Mozzarella, Tomato and Strawberry Salad (another catch-up recipe!).  It used up some of the many strawberries Paul grew, and was quick and easy to put together.  The salad was a combination I never would have thought to put together, but we both really enjoyed it.  The cookies were very interesting.  I was wishing we had some white wine to go with them (per Dorie's suggestion), but they were still pretty good with water.  I'm not sure if I would make them again - they weren't very sweet for a dessert and I have so many appetizer recipes that I'd like to try - but they were fun to try once.  I also served them with Olive Oil Ice Cream, and thought that made a nice pairing.

  1. That strawberry tomato salad was good...
I would think the sables would play off the olive oil ice cream pretty well. Sounds like a good call!

  2. We also loved the tomato and strawberry salad. That is not a combo I would have considered! I wasn't crazy about the sablés. Sounds like an interesting pairing with the olive oil ice cream.

  4. That salad sounds amazing! I liked the cookies but my husband made "that face" so they're probably a one time deal at our house too.

  5. Ah, good old Wolf Trap! I lived in DC for 8 years after college, and spent a whole lot of time trying to get out of the parking lot at Wolf Trap after concerts. Hours. We would sit in traffic for HOURS. haha. It's a good place to bring a picnic!

  9. I forgot about that salad, and this is a perfect time to be making it. The strawberries are nice
now, and I have great basil growing in containers. Thanks for reminding me. I liked the
sables, but I think I was the only one that did.

  10. I missed making that salad. It looks wonderful. Also missed the ice cream, but it sounds good with the sables. We had these with wine as suggested and I really liked them, though mixed reviews. Amazingly the leftovers were very popular when I brought them to the office. Love the concept though.

Your picnic looks and sounds delightful!

  11. I'm glad you tried pairing these with both a savory and sweet dish. I think I would have preferred them more with the ice cream, but I really did enjoy them by themselves with tea. Your salad looks so colorful and refreshing.

  14. I loved that strawberry salad last year. The cookies were a hit at our house, but I don't know how often I'll be making them!

  17. I wasn't on board yet when you all made the Mozzarella, Tomato and Strawberry Salad, Jora, so I am glad you reminded me of this tasty salad. I will make it for the 4th of July festivities here in Aspen. I also served these with ice cream (mint chocolate à la David) as well as with a white wine. I am not a fan of these little guys. I thought this was a trying-to-hard-to-be-different recipe.
