FFWD Vanilla Vegetable Salad + Tuna and Mango Ceviche
I know I've said this before, but we really aren't an appetizer family these days. I love appetizer food, but we just don't have the time or energy to eat in courses. So I served the starters from the last two weeks, with a fritatta on the side, as our dinner this Tuesday. The hardest part of this dish was probably procuring the sushi-grade tuna. The Whole Foods near my house didn't have any, but luckily I've noticed that the Whole Foods near my work has a special freezer case with sushi-grade fish. I've never paid much attention to it before, but it was perfect for this week. The fish is expensive, frozen at an unusually cold temperature, and only keeps in a home refrigerator for about a week, but it was perfect for a special-occasion recipe like this. We, Paul especially, loved the ceviche. The mango and avocado really made the dish for me. The Vanilla Vegetable salad, was okay. I didn't dislike it, but the vanilla really didn't do anything for me. I doubt it's one I'll be making again.

I don't think you were alone in your feelings about the salad. Susan mentioned the vanilla dressing on a pear salad - and I think that would be a nice way to enjoy that dressing.
ReplyDeleteYour meal looks super healthy! I am always looking for quick dressing ideas and this one was alright.
ReplyDeleteLooks like quite a number of us enjoyed the ceviche. I enjoyed the (seared) tuna and mango ceviche, and after overnight sitting in the fridge - it was great in a sandwich! I got frozen tuna too. The vanilla salad was de-light-ful! - light!
ReplyDeleteWe didn't care for the dressing on this week's salad, but I loved adding veggies to the greens. I will do that again and use my regular dressing next time.
ReplyDeleteWe had the ceviche with the seared shrimp last week and we loved it.
This salad doesn't seem to be the most popular Dorie recipe of late. Hopefully next week is more appealing. I often serve larger portions of the appetizers to make a meal. The salad was my lunch.
ReplyDeleteI didn't make mine raw. There is a Whole Foods not too far from me, good to know about what they carry.
ReplyDeleteI ate the vanilla salad and then the frittata. I enjoyed the vanilla salad, but would take the ceviche any day.
ReplyDeleteI did not make the Tuna and Mango Ceviche, I did a make-up instead. We did not care for this salad either. My family asked that I not make it again.
ReplyDeleteI am in the minority this week…I actually enjoyed the dressing! I don’t do sushi or raw fish…so I chose not to make the ceviche..I opted instead for Dorie’s bonn idee, seared shrimp! They were quite good! Moving on to November!
ReplyDeleteThe ceviche was good, but I agree that the salad was not much chop.
ReplyDeleteJora, Unlike you who does not have the time (I love hearing about Charlotte) to prepare or have or eat an appetizer course, I have never really enjoyed appetizers. First, I am now particularly good at making them and I have always felt they interfered with my guests eating a good dinner. I work so hard on the dinners I make for others, I don't want them to spoil it but filling up on apps. My bad. I did not make the Ceviche. Although I can now get good fish locally, raw fish, for an Iowa girl, just doesn't feel right. I also didn't make the salad. When Diane's son said it tasted like vanilla ice cream, I just decided there were other make-up recipes I wanted to do. Not a team player the past two weeks, I guess. Your plate does look appetizing, I must admit.
ReplyDeleteJora I took the easy way out on the tuna ceviche which kind of shames me that you didn't and I certainly have much more time on my hands than you! I ate it at a restaurant:) I didn't care for the vanilla salad. At all. Good for you fro cranking them both out.
