FFWD Duck Breast with Fresh Peaches

It's 3:30 PM and Charlotte is finally napping in her own crib.  She's been awake since she woke up at 8 AM.  I don't mind having her awake all day but--just like her mom--she gets very fussy when she's tired.  I can't complain, she's an excellent sleeper at night, but we're having trouble convincing her that a nap every once in a while isn't such a bad idea.  Anyway, what does this have to do with food blogging?  Nothing, except that I'm worried she'll be awake any second now so I'm going to keep this post extra short.

This was the second time I cooked duck at home.  The first also was with FFWD.  I like duck--and Paul really likes it and was thrilled to see me making it--but I just never think to make it.  It's also a fortune!  I don't know if I'm just buying expensive duck, but I think the only brand they had at the store I went to cost $30 for 2 pounds.  Coupled with the $9 I spent on peaches (I love peaches and bought a lot of extras), this was a delicious, but very expensive dinner.  I would definitely make this again, but I'll probably save it for a night in which Charlotte actually lets us sit and enjoy our dinner for more than 3 minutes.  Maybe in a few years....I served it with roasted squashed topped with lemon and parsley.  Paul is growing so much squash we could eat it every night and still have leftovers.  I'd appreciate any recipe suggestions that use up LOTS of squash!

  1. What type of squash do you have at your house? Looks like you could probably make a tortilla subbing the thinly sliced potatoes for squash.

Your duck breasts look very good too. When I make these expensive purchases, I can only think of how much it would cost to eat it outside of the house.

  2. Those prices do seem awfully high to me. I recommend making it some night when it is only you. :) That is what I did and I don't feel guilty at all.

  3. That does seem a little high to me - I think on D'artagnan you can purchase a 6 pack for $80, each breast is about 8 oz.

The squash looks so pretty, and your duck breasts look great. I agree with Adriana - I can justify expensive ingredients when I think of the cost at a restaurant.

  4. I am not sure if you are buying fresh or frozen, but in a lot of the grocers around here, you can buy frozen breasts for about 6-7$ a piece - not quite as nice as fresh, but still pretty good.
We are in squash/ zucchini over load and I have been grating it into almost everything I make - no dish is safe. (if I am baking with zucchini, I use a mix of yellow squash and zucchini). It also makes a nice gratin.

  5. My first son was always fussy between 4 and 6 which made it impossible to enjoy dinner. But the time passes quickly and a year from now she will be on a different schedule. My kids napped in the morning and afternoon when they were newborn…I guess I was lucky…or persistent!
Your duck looks perfectly yummy! I only bought two 8oz. fresh breasts, they were about 6 dollars each.

  6. Jora, it looks great! Sorry it was so expensive. I'm fortunate that my grocery store has it occasionally, and it's usually only $5 per breast (about 1/2 pound). I have a great zucchini gratin recipe with goat cheese and basil. I've never gotten around to posting it, but if you email me, I can reply with the recipe. bp410@verizon.net

  7. Jora, this looks like such an elegant meal - I love duck and the combination of sweet and savory in this recipe is very appealing - since we were "out of the country" for a bit, I did not get to make this dish, but there is "make-up" week this Friday, I am sure that I will get a chance to make this lovely recipe. I like that you made a delicious looking side dish of roasted squash with this!
Have a nice Sunday and hugs for Charlotte!

  8. Jora, I don't know where everyone else is finding these rather inexpensive (so to speak) duck breasts but I paid $52 for 4 breasts. Granted I live in the mountains and I had to go to a very high-end butcher shop finally but I have always found duck expensive. I am about ready to do a Costco run (40 miles away) and will see if they have duck for sale. I know that in the larger cities it must be cheaper. At any rate, your meal looks delicious. I don't have an squash recipes for you but sure would like you to send some my way. I envy you and Paul your garden. My daughter, Melissa's youngest child did not nap - it made for a very long, long day. Hang in there. This, too, will pass.
