FFWD Non-Dieter's Tartine

There were a couple of years in graduate school during which I tried almost every diet under the sun.  Luckily they never lasted for more than a day or two.  I think my longest was maybe a week.  Maybe it's my lack of discipline, but I quickly got tired of being hungry all of the time, missed whatever it was I wasn't supposed to be eating, wanted to go out with friends and eat normal things, etc., etc.  So I would quit that diet, be back to normal for a while, and then try a new diet.  One year I decided just to break the cycle, so my new year's resolution was to quit dieting.  Of course I couldn't even maintain that!  I did try fewer diets that year, and over time I've become less and less interested in dieting--or just too busy to care.  So, I had to laugh when I saw the recipe for this week.  Coincidentally, a few weeks ago Paul was reading through AMFT, happened to notice this recipe, and announced that it sounded awful.  I wasn't thrilled about trying it either, and really didn't think Paul would go for it, but I'm finally caught up so I didn't want to skip it.  I'm not a dieter though, so when the store didn't have fromage blanc I bought the full-fat sour cream that I usually buy, to mix with the low-fat cottage cheese that I already had in the fridge.  I also served this with some roasted potato and fennel soup, to make sure that it definitely wasn't a dieter's dinner.  With the fresh summer vegetables (including cherry tomatoes that Paul grew!) we actually both really enjoyed this tartine.  I'm surprised to say this, but it's actually a "recipe" that I want to make again this summer.

  1. I agree with you about repeating this one. I didn't think Hubby would go for this either, so I made just one for myself. I planned on having a cup of soup to go with it, but the tartine was so satisfying, I skipped the soup.
    Have a great weekend.

  2. I know; wasn't this surprisingly good? I think this was a winner with all the Doristas :)

  4. I was surprised, too, as the title turned me off a bit. It's a fresh and lovely meal, though. And your soup sounds wonderful.

  5. Dieting sucks. I would never in a million years have made this on my own, but it surprised me - I actually ate it because I liked it, not because I didn't want to waste it.

  6. The thought of a resolution NOT to go on a diet made me laugh. Though I'm pretty bad at diets myself. Your garden-fresh dinners sounds delicious. The tartine is a good vehicle for a tasty sandwich.

  7. The combination was better than the title implied.

The soup sounds good - and its finally cooled off enough that a bowl of soup sounds like a good idea :-)

  8. Thanks for keeping it real with your comments about dieting and "not dieting". Seems many folks had strong opinions on this topic :) I had grown up having cottage cheese as an option for toast- no diet involved- with fresh cracked pepper on top...so I was not as apprehensive as most. Of course since I am abstaining from carbs, I am glad I can draw on these memories and look forward to trying this when I up my carb intake. Still working off the carbapalooza of France.........

  9. Also- I have been so behind in commenting, in part for the vacation and in part because I AM SO BEHIND in everything....that I had to go through your posts to find out about your BABY - I was so curious !!! Egads I was behind given her birthday is 6/6th. She is utterly, utterly beautiful. I just loved the pictures of her and the happy family you posted. No worries about the sleep deprivation, or the occasional falling behind (though you have a newborn and are way ahead of me).And I adore her name. Heartfelt congrats !

  10. So glad to hear you aren't a dieter anymore... it really is a crazy way to eat. The only diet that I ever saw really good results with was when my mother went on Weight Watchers. I think the social support and the fact they teach portion control instead of deprevation is key to why it is so successful.
Well, I think your additions of potatoes and soup makes it a great dinner. I had it solo for lunch and it was satisfying but I might take your recommendation for a dinner option.

  11. I like the fennel soup-idea. Your dinner sounds very, very good. I have dieted for most of my Life but gave that up years ago. I do try to eat more healthy these days and I felt this tartine was a delicious and healthy alternative. I also used full-on normal sour cream with my large curd cottage cheese. I refuse to buy non-fat products. Channeling Julia Childs. I may try this again, with different sweet or savory toppings. I cannot do without my bread.
